Corporate bonds are debt securities. They are issued by companies to raise capital. You can think of it like this: In return for lending you money, the company commits to pay you back after a certain period of time. During this period, the company pays you interest, which is the profit you get for lending the money. Companies may issue bonds for a variety of reasons, for example to finance a large investment project, to expand their business or to pay off short-term debts.
